bad words

April 19th, 2010 by bushing · 20 Comments

Now that I’ve established some context, maybe this will make some more sense. The more games we have to try to run on our SPG/unSP emulator, the easier it will be to find and fix bugs, so when I had the opportunity to do so, I picked up a V.Smile Pocket on eBay that came with 11 cartridges, and I made some hardware to dump the cartridges.

There actually aren’t many strings in these cartridge images; mostly some library ID strings like “TVSYS TVLCD1.0” (apparently the internal name for this product), “OursLib V1.2.25 generated by TV3, 2005-05-24” and build dates. This makes the few strings that do exist jump right out. One of the games (Elmo’s World – Elmo’s Big Discoveries) has a list of “bad words”, which presumably is in there to keep you from entering them in as your character name. (The Wii’s System Menu had a similar list, if I recall correctly, but we never actually found a place where it was used.) It’s a fairly short list of 101 4-letter words (in alphabetical order), and many of them are quite appropriately forbidden for a toddler’s video game. Some are pretty tame — here’s all the ones that begin with the letter ‘b’:

b.s. bare barf boff bong bonk boob bras brat bums burp bust butt

Well, whatever, it’s just some silly game, right? It might just be part of some standard library they use. (Nevermind the fact that there’s nothing like it in 9 of the other games that I looked at.)

However, the game that is included for free when you buy the system — Alphabet Park Adventure — is special. It has some strange strings at the beginning:
**! 80092000201101
078800 V.Smile\084080 Wall-E Save the World\info.xml
078800 V.Smile\084080 Wall-E Save the World\info.xml
2008-08-26 V1 M04
TV 1.0

(I guess they cut-and-pasted a template from a Wall-E game, and maybe there’s some checksumming routine — there are 0x400000 words in the cartridge. Your guess is as good as mine as far as “crack” and “violate” go.)

From there, it just gets surreal. There’s a list of 1,023 “bad words”, varying from the tame to the bizarre. They’re in order first by word length, and then by alphabetical sort order within that length. This means that the longest words (well, phrases) are at the end of the list. I’ll provide a link to the full version of the full list below (warning — NSFW, by definition), but I’ll except some of the funnier ones here.

As far as I can tell, the list has a few straightforward categories:

  • Obscene words
  • Vulgar slang
  • Drug references
  • Racist epithets

All of those seem fairly reasonable. Then it gets strange:

  • Medical terms for anatomy, etc
  • Political terms that the Chinese don’t like
  • Words that I had to go look up in the dictionary
  • Phrases that have no real bad meaning in English, but might have some obscene connotation in Chinese

Here are some of the last group here that seem most strange. The oddest part is, I can’t even find a single place in the game (and it’s not a very big or complicated game) where you can enter any strings in at all — it’s mainly picking between 2 or 3 possible letters to fill in a blank. It’s also only in my US version of the game, and not in bmx’s French version.

Hahaha! You know what I think these are? Standard keywords defined by the Ministry of Public Security and otherwise used to greylist sites in the Golden Shield, a.k.a. the Great Firewall of China. Incidentally I would guess that Hackmii is currently 404’ing in China.

    subversion and anti-subversion <– WTF? I kinda like subversion…

  • 3 11rcombs // Apr 19, 2010 at 5:14 am

@nitro2k01: Well, that actually sounds about right. Heh, I’d say that list being public is something good for the Chinese.

  • 4 Arikado // Apr 19, 2010 at 5:43 am

That list is probably more fun than the game itself.

  • 5 tona // Apr 19, 2010 at 9:47 am

That’s pretty amusing. What if the list is not meant to appease the censors, but to avoid them? Secret messages being sent in shitty electronic games sounds good to me.

that’s pretty awesome. who knew they hated Mao enough to block maoism and “Mao Zedong” as well as “Mao Tse-Tung” ๐Ÿ˜›

  • 7 nitro2k01 // Apr 19, 2010 at 7:54 pm

Squiddy: Oh, they officially declared Mao’s teachings obsolete a couple of years ago. But apparently “the communist party” is in the list. That’s weirder. And “the republic of china”… What’s the problem there? That you’re implying that China is not a People’s Republic? I’m also noticing that ye ol’ ghawd exists twice in the list. Is this a mistake or did they really add Mr Skybeard twice?

  • 8 SquidMan // Apr 20, 2010 at 12:00 am

nitro2k01, oh, I had no idea they did that. Whatever ๐Ÿ˜› Anyways, yeah, they probably added god twice just because they hate the notion of christianity that much ๐Ÿ˜› (note they block jesus and christ)

  • 9 Wack0 // Apr 20, 2010 at 11:18 am

Now I find it apt to quote a term that for somereason isn’t in the list, but could very well be:
    WTF? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • 10 Wack0 // Apr 20, 2010 at 11:20 am

Oh and BTW, I thought the Wii’s list of bad words were so you couldn’t enter them as the name of your Wii, but maybe not. (That’s what I heard anyways)

@nitro: The Republic of China, as opposed to the Peoples Republic of China, refers to the nation of China before Mao’s revolution. The nation that is now reduced to the island of Taiwan, which is not recognized by China.

    @Arikado: Probably.

Also, can you guys have a mobile theme for this blog? I think the latest WordPress has one preinstalled.

  • 13 simonkagstrom.livejournal.com/ // Apr 20, 2010 at 9:57 pm

@nitro2k01: The republic of china is Taiwan, as in “Taiwan ROC”.

From now on, I’ll name all my in-game characters “great-nation chauvinism”.

  • 15 belajjal // Apr 22, 2010 at 11:05 pm

@Nitro2k01, I’m currently located in China and, so far, this site slips through the Golden Shield.

  • 16 launchpad.net/~tepples // Apr 23, 2010 at 5:35 am

@nitro2k01 “The Republic of China” is the government that left for Taiwan when the People’s Republic took over the mainland.

HAHAHa! Good good at hacking the V-Smile! I love the list of words! “Political terms that the Chinese donโ€™t like” I couldnt stop Crcking up after reading that! Nice job! Bet the people who made that list had some fun….

  • 18 SiLo // Apr 29, 2010 at 6:45 pm

Oh man, this is gold. I like “sex lupine”, which appears a terribly translated version of ่‰ฒ็‹ผ (se lang — literally ‘color wolf’). Though the meaning is more correct, it refers to someone who is a “pervert” or very sexual (usually not a good thing).
