Semi-brick fix discs for all three regions (updated)

May 18th, 2008 by bushing · 171 Comments

As promised, here are discs to install the latest version of the system menu for each region — v288/v289/v290 for JAP/USA/PAL, respectively. These are the updated “repad” versions.

dCiSo has generously offered to host these on console-scene.info:

Btw: the PAL link is the same as the JAP link. Here’s the correct one:

  • 2 Jay // May 18, 2008 at 6:29 am

    The Pal link is wrong.

  • 3 jan777 // May 18, 2008 at 6:30 am

can i just update my wii with this?

    ps not seni bricked

  • 4 bushing // May 18, 2008 at 6:40 am

    Fixed link, thanks.

@jan777: I don’t know. It should work, but I wouldn’t bother updating my Wii if I didn’t have a reason to do so. You don’t really get new features with newer versions of the menu (for the most part), so you have a little bit of risk with no gain.

  • 5 prinzhernan // May 18, 2008 at 6:50 am

AWESOME! It works! You’re THE MAN. Waited so long for my Wii to get un-bricked. Using a jap Wii, BTW. :) You’ll be famous for this~!

Bushing, thanks for your hard work on this. I’m sure this will be very handy for those unlucky enough to semi brick their wii. You are what this homebrew community needs and your dedication is much appreciated. I’m very much looking forward to your guys’ release of the homebrew channel. I think I speak for the whole community when I say that we really appreciate what your team has done for the homebrew scene. Keep rockin’, I can’t wait to have those beautiful bubbles grace my screen…

  • 13 John // May 18, 2008 at 8:21 am

Why my wii can’t recognize the disc?
I grabbed the rar file from rapidshare, extracted to iso, burn that using imgburn, tried three times with 2 verbatim dvdr, and 1 ritek, but still unable to read. What should I do?
My wii is NTSC US, bricked from mario kart pal.

  • 14 Honey // May 18, 2008 at 8:32 am

Got the same problem here !
Burnt the ntsc-j disc just now one time with nero8 4xspeed and one time with ImgBurn at 1xspeed , both times is used verbatim 16x -R.
No matter which way the wii cant read the disc any suggestion what to do ?
    Wii got d2c inside.

    maybe problem with d2c mod
    I also use d2c…
    tried 4 times,
    3 times verbatim DVD-R= 2x speed,4x speed,2.4 speed
    1 time ritek = 4x speed
    I give up

  • 19 prinzhernan // May 18, 2008 at 9:03 am

Major Havoc: AFAIK there are only one PAL version that’s the same for all PAL regions.

  • 41 John // May 18, 2008 at 3:48 pm

I also use dvd-r 16x verbatim and ritek, nothing happened. The disc spinning, then stop…unable to read.
5 disc sacrficied, with different speed…
Some said, need to use dvd+R, then change the booktype setting into dvd-r..
FYI, I use imgburn program and never failed when I burn the iso games…but this update iso is really weird… maybe some wii can’t recognize it or what???

  • 42 X_-F8-_X // May 18, 2008 at 4:27 pm

guys having troubles with wii not reading the disc; it looks like you all used verbatim discs. When I started buring ps2 games none of them worked. I found that my problem was using the crappy verbatim discs. get some better discs, try sony discs they should do the trick.

  • 43 ric@rdo // May 18, 2008 at 4:41 pm

I have a DVD+RW and burn many games on this DVD and all of them play on my wii. I burned the unbrick ISO on this DVD and it don´t work. So, i think that the problem is not on DVD media.

  • 44 James Ryan // May 18, 2008 at 5:29 pm

It’s so sad to know a lot of people can’t fix there Wii. I haven’t tried it yet because I didn’t buy some DVDs. I’m afraid that It won’t work.
I used to burn Wii game with DVD-R 8x Kachi. All of them worked fine on my Wii. Will you fix this problem very soon. So all of people whose Wii was bricked can fix it ?
    I own a JAP Wii.

  • 45 charlie // May 18, 2008 at 8:27 pm

Burned 6 more times using all kind of programs and disc brands and nothing happened still it wont work on my wiikey wii… someone help please!!!

  • 46 HcC // May 18, 2008 at 8:45 pm

I’m not sure if the version bushing posted is the same version that I’ve used, but I unpacked the 24mb rar and it, with padding, became 1gb, I then burned that at 4x on a verbatim dvd-r and it worked just fine. I have a d2ckey.

  • 47 bushing // May 18, 2008 at 9:00 pm

These images are about 40MB of actual data, followed by a bit over a GB of zeroes for padding.

I’m told that the padding data is necessary, and used for calibration purposes, and that some drives may work better if that data is semi-random (containing both zeroes and ones) instead of being all zeroes.

If anyone is having trouble, they might try overwriting the padding with something else. (anything, it doesn’t matter)

  • 48 GPMCX // May 18, 2008 at 9:18 pm

Hi from Brazil, works perfect for me, wii USA wiikey 1.9s, semibrick with Mario Kart PAL, Burn in DVD-RW and update… thanks a lot.

  • 51 bushing // May 18, 2008 at 11:04 pm

I used Sony DVD-R, Ritek DVD-RW, Maxell DVD-R, Verbatim DVD-R, on 1x-2x all failed. I have D2Ckey, notice that the LED on the PCB is not lit when ISO disc inserted, on flash when power up. I’ll keep reading the post till resolution. Pls help…

  • 58 Brian // May 19, 2008 at 4:56 am

Maybe there is something to the speed of the burning but tried the repad of the NTSC/J burned at 8X and it didn’t work. Then tried the original NTSC/J burned at 1X and worked like a charm.

    Thank you so very much!

    Hey it worked! thanks alot.

I have a question: I have a NTSC/ J WII that has been modded. I dont know what mod is on it. I am rather new to wii and everything. I am not sure what happend but after playing Mario Kart (I bought the us version) it semi bricked my wii. Now that I used th file you provided, my wii is at 3.2J in the setttings. If I play my US mario kart, that will brick my wii again right?

is there a way to fix this so I can play the game that I bought?

  • 86 Saurabh // May 20, 2008 at 4:46 am

txchevyz71 : after using the disc you have the latest firmware on your Wii, so it will not ask to update your Wii when you insert the MK disk => no bricking

I’ve got the semi-brick when I did update FW from the Metroid 3.

  • 120 MEGame // May 25, 2008 at 4:45 am

Hic, How long I need to wait?

    I own JAP Wii

  • 121 ChillyCat // May 25, 2008 at 7:05 pm

No one has any idea of what you’re asking. If you’re asking questions about this file, then you’re probably in the wrong place. Take door number two and count to three. Then take the third exit to the right and follow the arrows to the left. Keep left for 16 paces and and you’ll happen upon a red door. Knock on the door seven times and a gentleman will open the door and further explain the details.

  • 122 ChillyCat // May 25, 2008 at 7:07 pm

    Trust us !! It works.

Try reburning using ImgBurn @ 4X w/ decent quality media.

  • 145 MEGame // Jun 3, 2008 at 3:20 am

    It’s really….really……didn’t work

    Oh, poor me!

I burned & burned & burned & … with Nero, ImgBurn, Roxio,…. the same result!

I don’t know why! I’ve got the semi-brick from Metroid 3 US on my JAP Wii, then I do semi-brick one more time with Mario Kart US, but the amazing thing is I still can’t play the Mario Kart after I do the update FW. The Wii showed me the message in Japanese with ERR 001 (that what I guess) the same ERR I get when I try to play SSBB.

99% then stop! What can I do?

    I need a miracle!! :)

  • 146 intestlol // Jun 3, 2008 at 9:49 pm

    Ok .. 1 Q?

what if i bought an original Mario Kart NTSC-US ?
is it going to fix this problem?

since i used the pal and semi-brick blocked the setting and the device has been detected.

  • 151 Daisiu // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:23 am

  • 152 Cottonian // Jun 8, 2008 at 7:25 am

my kids just used their new (birthday present) wii japanese version with mariokart uk version. then i cannot get to setting screen, it keeps coming up with opera error message. i guessed from the above that this is semi brick!?

i am not very technical, how do i get the file from the link to a disc? a cd-r or a dvd-r? then what do you do? can someone be kind enough to provide a step to step idiot guide for me.

    this will be much appreciated.

  • 153 ChillyCat // Jun 8, 2008 at 7:27 am

thanks : Yes, I still have/had the dual channel displays. Only one of each works. Simply DRAG them to page 2 and you’ll not see them anymore.

    XROX :

    Unfortunatly, NO
Just use the files located here. This is a proven working solution. OR…….wait till a new FW version appears on newly released game [who knows how long that’ll be]

  • 154 ChillyCat // Jun 8, 2008 at 7:31 am

    1.)Download the file

2.) Use WINRAR to unzip the file to a ISO image
    Right click>extract here

3.) Use ImgBurn [free] to burn the ISO image.
ImgBurn is a super easy SW to operate.

Use a decent quality DVD-R media

  • 157 Project Omega // Jun 9, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Ok, we should see exactly WHAT Disc drives were dealing with.
To those that can/can’t get it to work; Post the make and/or model of the burner. Be sure to label it WORKING/NOT WORKING. ALWAYS keep drivers up to date, if you can.
Maybe we can figure that problem out easier.
After all, Drives can be racist against media.
Does one HAVE to have a modded Wii for this to work? Firmware 3.2e (I think)
    Not bricked (small whisper) yet.

BTW, is it possible to get perfect dark on the VC through modding/hacking another VC game? I’m sure it won’t show up in Shop channel in this lifetime.

  • 158 Project Omega // Jun 9, 2008 at 10:52 pm

One more thing, I find that if one uses image burning tools, set them between 1x-4x; it allows for better chance of decent results, also try a lens cleaner, if you can get one. Once a month seems okay, better to keep our stuff clean and efficient, right?
Let’s hope I never have to deal with a bricked Wii, as I can’t afford to get another, let alone pay for any type of repairs.
