The Homebrew Channel: Now With Less Beta!

December 8th, 2008 by marcan · 67 Comments

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you The Homebrew Channel, version 1.0.

Okay, so it’s really just another name for beta10. Getting into double-digit betas sounds kind of lame, and we don’t want to sound too much like google, so we’re calling it 1.0. After all, many bugfixes have come and this thing is pretty stable and feature-complete by now.

Want it? Here it is.

As I promised, we’ve listened to your requests for beta10. I didn’t promise we’d actually do anything about them, but at least we’ve taken care of some of them. Most easy additions have been added, and several bugs have been fixed. Although this release may not have USB support or themeing (boo!), things like Classic Controller and multiple-wiimote support should make your HBC experience just a bit nicer. Or at least I hope so, because I don’t think we’re going to be ready for another release for a while, and there’s other stuff to do (25C3, anyone?).

The Almighty Changelog:

  • meta.xml now handles all ISO-8859-1 characters properly (you can use either UTF-8 or ISO-8859-1 encoding, but UTF-8 is restricted to the ISO subset)
  • Wiimote power button support (shutdown)
  • Wiimote rumble honors system setting
  • Fixed some crash bugs
  • Fix meta.xml UNIX style newline regression
  • All wiimotes work now, not just the first one (only one can point at a time though)
  • Classic Controller support
  • Nunchuk support (scroll only, using the stick)
  • Guitar Hero 3 guitar support
  • Left and right change pages too
  • Hit 1 on Wiimote to retry the network connection (like clicking on the network icon or Z on the GC pad)
  • Added information to the installer
  • Fixed some networking issues with networking disabled (and possibly other bugs)
  • Pushed in some text to avoid overscan crop
  • Widened video width to match system menu (“black bars” fix)
  • B returns from app screen (unless scrolling with B-hold)
  • Try to initialize network earlier (slight speedup)
  • Retry network initialization a few times
  • Fix a networking issue (libogc problem)
  • Reload stub now identifies itself (magic number, for future use)
  • Support broken HTTP proxies in update check
  • Show IOS revision in main menu
  • () -> * (Hint: old-school Wiimote support needed what? Try it both ways.)
  • Enjoy!

    Whoo! Go Team Twiizers!
Great job, and happy 1.0 release (for once XDDDD)

  • 2 Kilroy // Dec 8, 2008 at 11:14 pm

I’ve noticed one bug so far with this latest version: occasionally whenever you press the B button to close an application description, the placement of the applications on the menu will mess up (as if they shift up past the top of the screen). Interesting, this happens consistently on the second, fourth, sixth, etc. page of applications, but this doesn’t happen on the first, third, fifth, etc. pages. Although this issue is easily corrected by switching to a different page and back again, this is a pretty major cosmetic bug in my opinion.

Overall, though, I’m impressed with this latest version of the Homebrew Channel. Also, great job on the “scam warning” screen that appears during the installer. Looks very nice. :)

Nice release. Coincidentally, I just got a classic controller for Mega Man 9, mostly because someone gave me $20 and my Wii is nearly full of WiiWare/VC. Glad to see that you’re not succumbing to the endless beta syndrome, and eagerly await USB device support, as well as BootMii!

  • 4 hanswannop // Dec 8, 2008 at 11:46 pm

    Sweeeet! Grabbing it now. :)

  • 5 GR1T // Dec 9, 2008 at 12:01 am

Nice update. Will there be a recording, or some sort of transcription, of your talk at 25C3 posted anywhere?

  • 6 DeathToM // Dec 9, 2008 at 12:07 am

Saw the update while using the homebrew channel. Thanks I guess

  • 7 tech3475 // Dec 9, 2008 at 12:16 am

    Cheers.

Enjoy 25c3. The video conferences are always a good laugh when they show of the stupid flaws in a console.

Yay 2nd! Great job Twiizers! You guys deserve a long break. Looking forward to the next release!!!

  • 9 roboprez // Dec 9, 2008 at 12:39 am

    Nice work again!!!

  • 10 Ademar // Dec 9, 2008 at 1:43 am

I just updated The Homebrew Channel via my Wii. Now this is what I call a very bright idea. Included with this update… a message advising the user that this is free software and if he of she purchased it then he or she should ask for a refund. I think a lot of angry people will be asking for refunds. That will teach people not to try to earn an easy buck from other people’s hard work. Great job!!!

  • 11 Louise // Dec 9, 2008 at 2:05 am

Cool, that you and Bushing with talk about the Wii!

Does anyone know what tmbinc will be talking about?

I was hoping that tyranid would do a follow up on his talk from last year on the PSP.

  • 12 hotzenplotz // Dec 9, 2008 at 2:06 am

Thanks for classic controller support and proper handling of multiple Wiimotes!

Too bad you did not fix the problem when you remove the SD card while the HBC is running. It is even worse now since the HBC just hangs with a 0% progress bar when you try to load an app after you inserted the SD card again…

Anyway, the HBC is still the best thing that happend to the Wii :-)

  • 13 thefinaldegree // Dec 9, 2008 at 2:21 am

    Woo, thnx Team Twiizers :D
    Another great release, nice work.

    *Is currently installing*

  • 14 Link // Dec 9, 2008 at 3:09 am

    Great work as usual.
And true, HBC is too ready to be called beta nowadays.

Just one issue on my side: while I was able to go online with b9 (Third party LAN adapter) Version 1.0 doesn’t seem to be able to connect anymore.

Game online functionalities still work so it wouldn’t be a major issue (seeing HBC could update itself by booting its own installer).

  • 15 guttertalk // Dec 9, 2008 at 3:13 am

I was at v.9, and when it tried to update, the download failed.

It’s using IOS36, and I have not installed the 3.4 system update.

    Any suggestions?

I take it that I might need to reinstall the Twilight Hack and start over, but would I need to delete the HBC before doing that?

    Thanks.

  • 16 MonkeyMagic // Dec 9, 2008 at 3:17 am

Thank you very much for the release – looks perfect to me!
    A simple question from a noob -
If I want to update the Homebrew Channel without internet access, I simply place the .DOL in my apps folder? Will that create duplicate homebrew channels, and do I have to do anything special to uninstall the version I have? (b8.)
    Thanks!

  • 17 alan.cramer.id.au/ // Dec 9, 2008 at 3:26 am

Awesome job on going OnePointOh! Can’t wait to give it a go! Now time to wait for BootMii…

  • 18 TwilightWii // Dec 9, 2008 at 3:56 am

Well Done Guys on the update :D
Massive Changelog, but everything is simple and neat, percise, why do we need themes (we’re not a PS3 :P ) and USB Support, wait until everything id supported i.e. USB 2.0 (or 3) support :)

Thanks again Team Twiizers, and good luck with everything other project with are fablous as usual.

  • 19 alphas // Dec 9, 2008 at 4:00 am

I have trouble with HBC 1.0.
・it can’t initialize Network. it was fine when i used beta9. i use the LAN adapter.
・HBC can’t recognize 16GB SDHC first time. it recognize when you reload.

  • 20 Navarr // Dec 9, 2008 at 4:02 am

Congrats! As always looking forward to downloading the wonderful HBC~

  • 21 marthapfahl // Dec 9, 2008 at 4:50 am

nice release really.. ive been enjoying your work ever since i found a (free ;) ) video tutorial on youtube..

but i still havent found out how to run homebrew software with two wiimotes (or if its even working)
now that youve explicitly mentionened that its working in HBC i just tried it and.. i dont know how.. of course i googled but i havent been able to find an answer yet.. maybe i asked the wrong questions

would be really nice if anyone could help me with this issue because things like “guitar fun” are much better with 2 players

    thx in advance

I like the notice at the start. Shame it will be too late for some by then although it might get them to ask for a refund.

That’s a pretty big log, GREAT work. Again!
Would loved USB support though but you can’t have it all ofcourse.

Also, nice that you are trying to reduce those scamming websites. Keep it going!

  • 28 ekolimits // Dec 9, 2008 at 7:05 am

i found some bugs: if you press b while in a app… where it says to load or back… if you press b over the back button the graphics mess up and go up for some odd reason… also another bug: if you attempt to shut down your wii with the power button on wii mote… than the wii does not shut down properly… the screen stays on but wii shuts down… very wierd… plus, r u going to implament customizing the order the apps are in? i was really looking foreward to that as right now alphabetically organized is kinda hard… plus i like the hold2 and perss 1 minigame… fun stuff… i came accross it acidentally. LOL it keeps your score!

  • 29 bitflusher // Dec 9, 2008 at 7:08 am

    great news!

autoupdate ran fine! nice scam warning :P

i love the shutdown with wiimote power button feature.

  • 32 marcan // Dec 9, 2008 at 8:41 am

    Sigh, I guess we’re on to 1.0.1.

The B bug has been fixed.

I need someone with a USB Ethernet adapter AND a USB Gecko to help me fix the ethernet bug. Mail me at marcan@marcansoft.com .

  • 33 sess // Dec 9, 2008 at 10:07 am

I got a Nyko Ethernet adapter, but no USB Gecko. :/

Seems like it ain’t working, even if I click the LAN icon. Thanks for the release and the hard work, by the way, and have fun at 25C3. :p

  • 34 marcan // Dec 9, 2008 at 10:22 am

Found and fixed another bug: Wiimotes not auto-shutting-down (I forgot to tweak a value after I increased the resolution of the accelerometer stuff).

Waiting on the final ethernet bug – I desperately need someone who can reproduce it and has a usb gecko. Otherwise I’ll have to release 1.0.1 without a fix for that one.

  • 35 tona // Dec 9, 2008 at 10:54 am

    epic fail.

  • 36 openid.aol.com/erwos // Dec 9, 2008 at 10:58 am

What if I was to snail-mail you my ethernet adapter, marcan? I don’t have dire need of it right now, and I don’t think it to be a bad idea to contribute to the cause. :)

  • 37 bob // Dec 9, 2008 at 11:04 am

Hey the picture still doesn’t go all the way to the edges of the screen on my NA NTSC 16:9 TV. It is better than it was before, though.

    Thanks!

  • 38 sanderevers // Dec 9, 2008 at 11:38 am

I don’t have an USB Gecko either, I do have an Official lan adapter which isn’t working in the HBC.

  • 39 IronMask // Dec 9, 2008 at 11:51 am

Jeez, I wish I could help you on that ethernet bug.. because that has definately been a problem with me and a few others. It works sometimes and alot of times it don’t. Mine happens to be a Verizon FIOS router made by ActionTec M1424-WR Rev. C. There are several of us with this issue on GBAtemp maybe someone there can help you?

I think that’d take too long – I want to get this done ASAP.

Should be about the same as the system menu in 4:3 mode

    Excellent work.
I know you said no more new features but I just wanted to put this one out there since it isn’t exactly urgent but eventually as we have more and more homebrew apps it will be needed; categories. Right now I have approximately 10 screens of apps and growing so it may start getting ridiculous but I completely understand that you guys have other priorities right now.

@marcan: yeah, you’re right. I changed the setting to 4:3 mode and it is exactly the same; the wii menu doesn’t reach the edges of the screen in that mode either. So… no chance you’ll be adding 16:9 mode?

  • 52 brunetteredhead // Dec 9, 2008 at 4:36 pm

I found a minor bug I thought I would let you guys know about. If you are on an even number page and you select any entry with the Classic Controller and hit ‘a’ to enter the program summary and then hit the ‘b’ button to exit out of it, then the channel icons will jump up the screen to where only half are visible. As far as I can tell, this only happens when hitting the ‘b’ button and not by clicking the back option.

Thanks for the great release! Classic controller support is amazing, and a functional power button makes life easier after the long sessions I put into Link’s Awakening the past few days ; )

  • 53 Deozaan // Dec 9, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Thanks for the update Team Twiizers! I love the Wii but to be honest, I haven’t really played a retail game for a few months now. But the homebrew scene is what keeps me going on the Wii as I wait for more games I’m interested in buying.

Not really. HBC wasn’t engineered with 16:9 support in mind.

  • 58 r1cola // Dec 9, 2008 at 7:36 pm

marcan: do you have numbers for how many ppl have downloaded from the auto-update feature?

i wonder because this would shed some light on how many users there are for homebrew on the wii, as it would be more accurate than any regualr download from web sites of the files…

    just curious
