HBC beta10, aka your last chance

November 4th, 2008 by marcan · 129 Comments

As you all know, we’re getting busy with several other projects, and HBC isn’t a priority. However, the beta9 release had a few rough edges, and some things that should have been fixed weren’t.

So we’re giving you the chance to voice your pet peeves about HBC now, and we’ll release a new version soon. Consider this version “final” at least for the time being. HBC is basically feature-complete, so we won’t be adding any new major features, but we want to get rid of some remaining bugs and annoyances. Once this new version is out, you’re going to be stuck with it for a while.

Things that we’ve already fixed/added for beta10:

  • meta.xml now handles non-ASCII characters properly (you can use iso-8859-1 or utf-8 encoding, but utf-8 is restricted to the iso-8859-1 subset)
  • Wiimote shutdown support (in libogc git now – we should have added this earlier)
  • Wiimote rumble now honors the rumble setting
  • A crash bug or two (hard to hit)

Post a comment if you want something fixed. We reserve the right to fix whatever we want and ignore the rest, but at least we promise we’ll listen. Please read the comments before asking for something; we don’t want 20 people mentioning the same thing.

Guys, NO BIG NEW FEATURES. Don’t even think about integrating other apps, or adding disc loading, or anything like that. We’re talking about small fixes like honoring some setting or adding some minor controller support. Classic controller support is plausible. Fixing some graphical problem is doable. Integrating FTPii isn’t. Sound isn’t. I’m deleting totally implausible posts to keep things sane.

Edit 2: to the people who requested features which are obviously already in beta9 or even beta8: shame, shame, shame.

Speak Up Now Or Forever Hold Your Peace.
Comments are now closed – they’re starting to get repetitive. You’ve had your chance. If you believe you’ve found a real bug that was not mentioned in the comments (and that doesn’t mean “I believe this should be done this way” – it means “this is crashing / breaking / not working properly”), drop me an e-mail at marcan@marcansoft.com or message marcan on EFNet.

I’d like a green background for the new HBC.

    Thanks.

run homebrew from usb device ?

  • 3 Fudgehat // Nov 4, 2008 at 5:29 am

Classic Controller support would be nice. It’s pretty annoying switching from CC on the Wii menu to Wiimote in the HBC then back to CC once you’ve loaded up your emulator of choice.

  • 4 MasterYami // Nov 4, 2008 at 5:36 am

    1. Mark some hombrew as ‘favorite’ so it is displayed on the first few pages, rather than manually editing the .xml to do that.

    2. Building on gerome’s first idea, being able to change the color of the background would be nice.

More if any comes to mind.

Support all SDHC devices or a tool to format a SDHC card to the right format directly from HBC. I could’nt make my Kingston 8 Go SDHC card (class 4) with the HBC yet. (If you got any suggestion, it will be appreciated).

  • 8 Navarr // Nov 4, 2008 at 6:44 am

Well, since we’re getting ready to finalize it.

Why don’t we increase the utf8 charset in the HBC for XML files to include more than just iso-8859-1?

Support for loading homebrew off of USB devices and/or DVDs (Homebrew Loader did it) would be nice. [I know this is almost a copy]

Did you fix the problem with pushing the power button on the Wii console itself?

Does the reset button on the Wii console itself work?

It’s interesting that you’re ready to release another version so soon, but it’s kind of sad that the HBC is almost finished and we’re going for a “near final” version. You’ll fix any problems that come up though, won’t you? :p

  • 9 bugger // Nov 4, 2008 at 6:48 am

The text size is really small at the top. It’s not very readable on an SD TV. But thank you for one of the best inventions for the Wii ever!

  • 10 Muzer // Nov 4, 2008 at 6:57 am

I do have a few feature requests in here, do feel free to ignore whatever you want, but do read the whole thing, this is just all the features I would want in an ideal world.

Support for USB keyboards, possibly using libwiikeyboard. That’s a really easy lib to use, so go for it (as well as the classic controller support above).

Possibly support for more media formats for apps, including USB, maybe even DVD, though I would assume this would be more likely in b11 or maybe even later.

Rather than throwing an exception screen if a meta.xml file is invalid in some way, make it display a nice message saying which file and which line the problem is in, then load but without that app displayed.

    The ability to play music.

The ability to select a file on your SD for that file’s location to be passed as argv[1] in the app, like Homebrew Launcher does.

    Integrate FTPii

Allow wiiloading from locations not in the LAN, but give a confirmation message.

If the app is an invalid elf, give a proper message saying “convert it into a dol” rather than just “invalid wii application”

That’s all I can think of right now. I will probably think of more.

  • 11 http://maikelsteneker.blogspot.com/ // Nov 4, 2008 at 7:09 am

    A new update so soon?

I like the Wiimote shutdown support, it’s really the most important feature I wanted.

Thanks a lot for this :)

  • 12 kedest // Nov 4, 2008 at 7:13 am

-option to have more applications displayed at the same time
-statistics, see a list of your most-used homebrew
-option to have homebrew listed in a custom order

  • 13 volmer // Nov 4, 2008 at 7:26 am

Not a fatal error by any means, but please look into the video mode, and possibly the default one in libOGC? The HBC exhibits the same underscanning issue that plagues multiple third party titles: Black borders are present on the left and right sides of the screen when your monitor or TV does not overscan in 480p.

  • 14 alejo0121 // Nov 4, 2008 at 7:32 am

There’s a bug with the sound when you go back to the Wii Menu from the HBC, seems like the quality drops and it sounds like an old radio (even in game). To get rid of the sound issue I must reset the Wii so the sound gets back to normal. Usually I run Homebrew Browser, Gecko OS, and the WAD Manager… Don’t know if the bug comes from any of this apps or the HBC

  • 15 svpe // Nov 4, 2008 at 7:36 am

If you have any problems with your SDHC card(s) please come to #wiidev at efnet and poke me there. when you have some time to test some stuff. I’ll add some debug printfs to the wiisd code and xou’ll need to tell me what appears on your screen (or use a usb gecko ;) ). Feel free to do this yourself too. I think that this happens while I’m waiting for the SDHC card to finalize initialization.
It might just be a stupid timeout issue :)

  • 16 A Z // Nov 4, 2008 at 7:38 am

    My suggestions are:
    -faster network initialization
-integrating the Homebrew Browser into the Homebrew Channel.

  • 17 ften // Nov 4, 2008 at 7:57 am

-Display free space left on SD card in the sub-menu, maybe under where you put the IOS version.

-List all IOSes installed in the sub-menu.

    Thanks

  • 18 harak // Nov 4, 2008 at 8:09 am

@svpe Thanks, I will be there probably tonight.

  • 19 GhostSonic // Nov 4, 2008 at 8:19 am

Classic Controller Support? Background or perhaps customizable skins? Maybe something like adding short cut buttons to certain homebrew apps so when you hold down a certain button (like up on the D Pad) it automatically loads it, so you can get into your favorite apps quicker. I dunno. Maybe it’s a bit too much.

  • 20 TioSolid // Nov 4, 2008 at 8:34 am

Be able to change (at least basically) the Homebrew Channel colors. I second that.

Well, if you have some spare time in your hands, you could make HBC run PS3 games too :P

  • 21 MisterOhm // Nov 4, 2008 at 8:54 am

Oh! As well as fix the bug where if you have two controllers on, they switch slots. (Wiimote 1 in 1 and Wiimote 2 in 2, when HBC started, Wiimote 1 in 2 (2nd LED) and Wiimote 2 in 1.)

  • 22 kedest // Nov 4, 2008 at 9:05 am

Make catagories and have them displayed as a menu
    so you make a folder
    \apps\emulators\snes9x
    \apps\emulators\fceugx
and the the hbc displays 1 button ‘emulators’ and if you click on it, it will display snes9x and fceugx

  • 23 picano // Nov 4, 2008 at 9:10 am

    Fix Controller Synching / Activation
-I have three wiimotes around at any given time, HBC seems to love to select the one I am NOT using to be the one in control. Maybe just allow any / all controllers to be active? In other words… “4 player HBC”.

    Already suggested (for emphasis!)

    Custom skins
-Simple png / jpg support for a pic behind the bubbles
    Custom Organization
    -Rearrage applications, more viewing options

Thanks for all the hard work guys.

Great to see you’re still somehow working on the HBC! Here are my wishes:

    - I second the wish for classic controller support.
    - It would be nice to be able to easily change the ordering of the homebrew apps. For example, press 1 to have them ordered alphabetically and 1 again to reverse the order. Press 2 to have the apps ordered by a new value in the XML file to have some kind of “my favorites”.

Other than that I am pretty happy with the HBC the way it is. Keep up the good work!

  • 26 Hugh Isaacs II // Nov 4, 2008 at 9:56 am

All I want to see is USB Keyboard support, Classic Controller support and Nunchuck support to support my unending laziness.

  • 27 flark // Nov 4, 2008 at 10:20 am

@Marcan: You should finally get rid of those confounded skiny black bars that show up on widescreen displays. You said it would be easy, and so I was expecting that beta 9 wouldn’t have them. Maybe you simply forgot?

Please, please for the love of god…

  • 28 OrkSovaj // Nov 4, 2008 at 11:17 am

You can set a little picture that indicate the battery level of the current Wiimote.

  • 29 tech3475 // Nov 4, 2008 at 11:23 am

Move the reload button to the main screen.

This is the only “sane” idea I can think off.

    thanks.

  • 30 Kyo // Nov 4, 2008 at 11:40 am

Oh, and maybe macros. Like if you press 1 + 2 while the HBC is starting (or in the HBC), it would autostart a certain app

  • 31 Helwem // Nov 4, 2008 at 11:57 am

A button to update, the last time I did not ask update and what to do by hand tube, almost prefer to tell me when to upgrade check better than ever that I get to the HBC (so would start faster yet) thank you very much for all your Work and forgiveness for my English

  • 32 Ademar // Nov 4, 2008 at 12:14 pm

I think that the ability to order your homebrew apps would be great. Right now HBC orders them alphabetically from the META file. There could be an extra line on the meta file to tell HBC which will be the first one on the HBC app list then we would be able to order them.
Other than that, HBC is great. Thanks for coming up with this great app.

  • 33 Slowking // Nov 4, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Remove the question if I “really want to return to the boring system menu”. If I click this button, then yes I want to return to the boring system menu and to be asked again is just redundant. It’s not like I can never enter the homebrew channel again after I exited…

  • 34 Kolma // Nov 4, 2008 at 12:43 pm

    Heres my List
(Yes i realize that some are already noted by having seconds and thirds show that we really want it)

    1. Classic Controller Support(Guitar support if possible aswell so we can just jump straight into gutiar fun or another similiar ap if ever made)

    2. Background color change(or pic entirely (keep the bubbles option))

    3. Space left on SD card/USB drive

    4. USB drive support to load aps off that

5.Ability to delete aps and folders off the HBC menu(i know sd explorer does this but sometimes doesnt work, and the homebrew browser only can delete what it recognizes)

    6. Support for folder catagories(games, aps, media players, emulators, etc)

    7. Have left and right on d-pad also move between the “pages” like L,R and -,+ do

again sorry if long (hopefully didnt leave anything out)

  • 35 Hacked Box. // Nov 4, 2008 at 1:20 pm

I’m going to ignore all of the other’s peoples replies above and add what I think should be added. I’ve had the HBC since it’s public release, and it’s great. There’s not much that can be added, but here’s what I think should be:

    1. Load apps from a USB device from the back USB slot.
    2. Create categories. The category for an app can be changed in its XML document.
    3. Different picture format can be used than .png. I don’t know if this is possible, but if it is, i’d like to be able to see .jpg, and possibly video formats being allowed to be used.
    4. Different controller support, like the guitar and classic controller.
    5. If possible, i’d like to be able to change the blue colours in the background and the colours of the boxes that you click on to get homebrew. That’d be amazing.
    6. Have a ‘Search for update…’ button. It’d be a lot simpler than waiting for it to find it itself.
    7. Be able to organize apps however you want, instead of in alphabetical order. I know that it is sometimes Windows that does it, but I thought that the HBC did it too.
    8. When you press the HOME button, although I do like the custom thing, I think it could be better if the systems own HOME Menu should come up. I think there should be a button to get to the menu that appears when you press the HOME button now; and when Exit is clicked, it simply exits that menu, no the channel. I say this because it allows you to control the remote more on the HBC.

That’s all I can think of for now, but I will add more if I think of some.

  • 36 Wii Watcher // Nov 4, 2008 at 1:20 pm

    Hello,
    Here is my list:

    1. Ability to select music from SD card or something, so you can listen to music in the HBC.

    3. Ability to use a USB mouse.

    4. Custom Home Menu.

    5. Change text in the HBC from the HBC.

    6. Reset button for resetting the HBC instead of your whole wii system.

    7. If you use apps that can brick your wii if you misuse it than first show a warning before you start it.

I really hope that the HBC beta 10 is gonna be great and I wish you good luck!!!

  • 37 djdynamite123 // Nov 4, 2008 at 1:38 pm

Yeah able to delete contents from SD Card would be an advantage, SD Explorer has loads of bugs and cannot delete a folder, if you delete a folder with contents still in, it doesn’t recognise you have deleted anything, so your files are deleted but the SD Card must have the cache of the files still being there, so you have to format.

  • 38 magu // Nov 4, 2008 at 1:49 pm

Function to load apps directly by just pushing A, ie. skip the infobox, and then have the XML-metadata show if for example b, 1, 2 or whatever is pushed. This would half the amount of clicks needed for normal usage.

  • 39 Dr.Mario // Nov 4, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Not sure how big of a feature this is for you to implement since I no nothing of wii coding but like #6. for what Kolma said; have folders to put your homebrew in, so instead of putting your homebrew on your sd card in x:\apps\appname\boot.dol
    it can be like x:\apps\category\appname\boot.dol

  • 40 http://muhmuhkuh.myopenid.com/ // Nov 4, 2008 at 1:52 pm

something similar as 4/3 or 16/19 ( i don’t know the right numbers), because on my TV the buttons etc. are too great and they show out of the screen (sorry, only school english :P )

  • 41 rykin // Nov 4, 2008 at 1:53 pm

The fixes mentioned on the front page are most everything I would have asked for.

One thing I would like, and I can understand if it’s not added: If a program does not have a meta.xml, I’d like to see the FOLDERNAME display as the appname in the HBC (rather than displaying the entire file path).

I can live without it, though. Shutting down the Wii without needing to leave the HBC was the only real feature I wanted.

  • 42 pinecone // Nov 4, 2008 at 2:03 pm

    There’s a danger here of allowing over-customisation.

The sleek and well thought out design of the HBC could be ruined by people wanting to put pictures of their dog in the background. By allowing all this, you’re opening yourself up to an onslaught of people wanting to stretch JPEGS one way and people wanting GIF compatibility and people asking why you can’t have a checkered colour scheme.

The categories idea is nice, but opens up the problem of having to standardise the category options somehow. You could end up with ill-defined categories and duplicates such as “Demos” and “Demonstrations” being treated as different.

One thing that would be nice (although it involves a bit of graphical re-working) is a sidebar of your 5-or-so most used apps. With support for larger SD cards, coupled with the ever increasing range of homebrew out there, many will have numbers heading up into the hundreds of homebrew apps. The side-bar would solve many of the problems users have put forward above.

A tile view of apps might also be nice, but this involves a bit of elbow grease.

Versioning support (i.e grouping like applications of different versions) and sorting by developer would also be nice.

One last slightly silly request (but probably very easy to implement) would be a ‘shuffle’ feature, whereby shaking the Wiimote causes the system to suggest a random app to launch for those feeling a bit bored or uninspired.

One last question: when you finally decide to stop working on the HBC, will it be released to the people (i.e source released)? (If WiiMU is as successful as I hope, I suppose the HBC would become redundant?)

    Cheers
    Pinecone

  • 43 Narf // Nov 4, 2008 at 2:13 pm

    1. Add date and time in exit menu.
    2. Bigger buttons for wireless and gecko, now is impossible click for reconect.
    2. Wiimote shutdown soul shutdown the wii not the wiimote.
    3. Buttons for info in menu options, “wii information” (empty space, chip, region, version, IOS, etc) and other “SD information” (size, empty space, format, type)
    4.Categories like wiibrew in xml.
    5. Multiple language in xml.
    6. First pag sould be the 4 last aplications used. After every one like now-
7.Loading application, cursor soul change to a clock and light of wiimote can increase or loop.
    8. Imagen splash before “channel homebrew”.

  • 44 twofive // Nov 4, 2008 at 2:35 pm

What about adding the possibility switch between old and new ELF loader? Its kinda annoying that old apps don’t run on Beta9 without converting them to DOL. So I didn’t update and I’m still on Beta8 while having the others have features like a reload button (wanna one too!!! :-) )

And, yeah, classic controller support would be great.

  • 45 SwooshyCueb // Nov 4, 2008 at 2:40 pm

The ability to boot straight into a dol/elf on the sd card instead of the actual homebrew channel. This would make it more convenient for people to use other homebrew loaders from the wii menu. (maybe make it so you can hold down a button while it is loading to go to the homebrew channel instead of the homebrew that has been selected to autoboot).

I’d love to stick my oar in for improved ordering for the apps. Categories would be good, but a use count order would be even better.

What I mean by that is that every time you run an app it gets a persisted counter incremented. The HBC would show apps with the highest counter first. That way, it auto sorts by what you use most.

  • 53 GoldenAlchemist // Nov 4, 2008 at 3:07 pm

add support for a special .xml file, if it exists in a folder, that folder is treated as a directory, and all the folders in it are also checked for boot.dol, icon.png and meta.xml

dont need to confirm that you want to exit, or have a way to turn that off. (haha, you called the menu boring :) , now give it a rest :| )

i feel like networking could be tightened up, but that might just be the rest of my gear dieing.

make the menu that comes up by pushing home, more like the nintendo one. with a wiiremote settings menu. and/or move the reload button to the main view.

when you pop out the sd card, it still shows the programs and lets you navigate around, but it wont load any of them (duh) even if you put the card back in (d’oh). how about auto blanking the screen when the card is popped out?

have some way for hbc to remember what page it was on when you come back to it. its very annoying when i’m checking out some of the programs at the end of the list, and everytime i exit one, i have to flip through 15 pages to get back to where i was.

+ and – are for volume, not for moving side to side (that’s what the arrows are for).

  • 57 http://emailtoid.net/i/5bd19e74/5aa9b299/ // Nov 4, 2008 at 3:26 pm

(I’m aware that the above sounds like WiiLoad…what I meant was instead being able to define a list of apps on the server and leave it running constantly, without having to specify your Wii’s IP on the serving host – we have two Wiis here with dynamic addressing! – My Apache server doesn’t require that I enter the IP for every browser that I want to connect :) )

  • 58 Deozaan // Nov 4, 2008 at 3:47 pm

I’d like the “exit” text changed to “Wii Menu” so that it’s clearer what the button does. This will reduce the chance of you thinking you’re exiting from those options back to the Homebrew Channel.

Also, I’m not sure if it already does this or not, but for the sake of the batteries Wiimotes should power themselves off after 5 minutes of inactivity, and for the sake of burn-in, the screen should dim (according to Wii Menu settings) after 5 minutes of inactivity. Sorry for requesting these things if they already function this way. I don’t think I’ve ever left the HBC alone for 5 minutes.

  • 59 wiisixtyfour // Nov 4, 2008 at 3:48 pm

I think the home menu should be similar to the official one, so that it’s like an actual channel.
and it shows wiimotes connected, battery life, etc.

  • 60 SquidMan // Nov 4, 2008 at 4:23 pm

I agree with #52 about the use count ordering. That would be extremely helpful =D.
Also, CC support would be nice as well.

Would it be feasible to add a feature where you can at least delete (possibly rename/edit) files that are on the SD card directly through HBC?

As far as bugs, I don’t think I’ve noticed anything, aside from dropping the support of .elf files, but there’s converters out now and developers should be releasing their apps as .dol anyways.

Thanks and keep up the great work on HBC and good luck on all future projects!

  • 65 karyjuice // Nov 4, 2008 at 5:43 pm

1- Classic controller support (nunchuck and gh controller also if possible)

2- Possibility to change homebrew order without having to edit the .xml to 1-firstHomebrew, 2-secondHomebrew…

3- 1 click boot (instead of showing description)

4- 1 click exit (instead of confirmation)

Nothing else, and thanks for all your work!

  • 66 Seth Merkley // Nov 4, 2008 at 6:09 pm

If someone is reading these comments and thinking guitar support is ridiculous, then let me point out that if the classic controller is supported, that means that the guitar is supported too. The joystick on the guitar is recognized as the left joystick on the classic controller, and the green and red buttons are A and B on the classic controller respectively.
Other that classic controller support, I agree with the idea of more sorting capability. A simple addition of an order field in the .xml would be the simplest, and categories using folders would be very nice.
I can’t remember what happens when you update, since I haven’t bothered to let it connect for ages and I’m still on beta8, but I think that a check for update button would be nice, since most of us know about the updates before we actually apply the updates, and if the auto updater does find an update then it should ask you if you want to update or not. (If it already does this, I plead ignorance.)
What would be really cool is if it detects an invalid .elf file then first it looks for a .dol file in the same folder, and if it doesn’t find one then it uses a built in .dol converter and automatically creates a boot.dol in the folder. This way if your .elf is invalid then it attempts to fix it without deleting your .elf file. I’m guessing you’ll not want to do that, since you’re trying to enforce a standard here, but I really do think it you could have at least waited until the devkit actually made valid .elf files first.
And my last suggestion is the ability to have an application be autoboot. Many flashcards on the DS had this, and it would be really nice for those people who are using another homebrew application loader. A simple button combination at startup could bypass this feature.

As for everyone requesting skinning, color changing, video files, sounds, music, etc. I say get realistic. A simple RGB color slider for the background and text might be plausible, but if you’re too lazy to boot up a media player application to listen to your music then you have to get past that on your own. The HBC isn’t meant to be anything more than an application loader, and as far as I see background music doesn’t have anything to do with loading applications, unless maybe you’re blind.

My ultimate wish is for there to be a one-stop-shop operating system where you have all these organizer/media player/file browser abilities. Much like DSOrganize. You could have filetype associations like windows, or the superior magic that linux does without having to use file extensions. Being able to browse to my videos and ROMs and having them automatically boot up in my media player or emulator of choice would be very awesome indeed. Then again, I could move my computer over to my TV. I understand that the HBC won’t become this until we’ve discovered cold fusion, but until then I’ll just let someone else make this program.

I volunteer to translate HBC to Traditional Chinese.

  • 68 lulajardim // Nov 4, 2008 at 7:09 pm

i think HBC should have a “Check for Update” button. This way if you have a problem and the download fails you can just click on “Check for Update” to try again.

Either that, or you could change the “Download failed” dialog so that it has 2 options: Retry or Cancel

  • 69 Kamek // Nov 4, 2008 at 8:19 pm

As suggested above, I would like a toggle to opt-out of automatic updates, or at least a way to turn off the nag screen when you first reject the update.

Though I guess it doesn’t matter much if this is going to be the last version for awhile.

  • 70 dlf // Nov 4, 2008 at 8:39 pm

I second what: kedest (post #22) said. It’d be great if we could have like on large folder (name of our choosing) where we put the emulator folders that have the ROMs & save files.

I think it’d declutter the main page of the SD card.

    Hi,

I’d love category (somehow, xml or directory) and more apps on a screen; But that’s not this post’s goal, as already stated before.

What I suggest you is to allow more than one xml at a time. And add a way to pass params to the homebrew lunched.
This way you could say which rom to load to an emulator or a level/song to any games or apps.

    Congrats for all your work

  • 73 lethlorian // Nov 4, 2008 at 9:16 pm

I think that a notification about the SD card not being present would be nice. I often remove it to add content, and going back and forth, ive had many times that i forget to put it back it. Perhaps an message that the card is not present and auto-refresh upon its insertion would be wonderful.

power button on wiimote should power off the console, not the wiimote

Buttons for info in menu options, “wii information” (empty space, chip, region, version, IOS, etc) and other “SD information”

1 click boot (instead of showing description) I agree with this, perhaps hold down A for a moment on the icon will launch, instead of click to confirm.

  • 75 Bubble-07 // Nov 4, 2008 at 9:58 pm

I personally think the following would be nice additions to the HBC:

    - Customizable skins using PNGLIB
    - The ability to put homebrew into categories
    - USB loading
    - More supported controllers
    - Macros
    -Most used homebrew list
    -”Favorites”
    - No message upon exiting
    - Customizable background music from preconverted source

Of course, the HBC already fills the needs of people, and doesn’t really need much updating. I really don’t think we need to do much other than fix the bugs.

  • 77 Dr. Waldo Fehr // Nov 5, 2008 at 12:14 am

Well, as stated, keep the Wii remote order when entering HBC and a slider bar for more or less bubbles. We users love those bubbles so much. Slider for background resolution, opacity, and make the 1 player finger a .PNG or .JPG.

  • 78 HyperHacker // Nov 5, 2008 at 1:11 am

Source code, so we can add these features ourselves if you’re not going to. :-p

Only two other things come to mind, and I haven’t used version 9 yet, so maybe they’re redundant.

One, four items per page is very little; add an option to use an icon grid like the Wii Menu.

Two, assign apps to different button combinations, such that holding those buttons at startup launches that app. For example, holding A launches one thing, B launches another, no buttons goes into the HBC as normal. This would be useful when BootMii comes out and lets us boot straight into HBC from power-on.

  • 79 me.yahoo.com/a/DGb42gMio // Nov 5, 2008 at 1:38 am

I’d like to add my voice to the call for Classic Controller support. And to be able to manually (or otherwise) order the items in the list. The most common apps I use end up on page 2 or 3.

Also, I’d like to see UTF-8 support for CJK (Japanese, specifically), but I see this as less likely.

  • 80 OiramOiram // Nov 5, 2008 at 2:01 am

Since I mostly use HBC to play games via Emulators and therefor use a GC Controller or my GC2SNES Adapter and the HBC already allows to navigate with these devices the only thing im really really missing is the option to shut the wii down (red light) oder standby (orang light) like with the application “shut”.

I think this shouldn’t be the problem to add 2 points to the already existing logout menu along with rebooting and going back to the wii menu.

For now I always have to stand up and go to the wii and hold down the power button for 2 seconds. pretty annoying.

    Bug fix:

HBC beta8 has never asked me to update. I had an issue with patchmii (bushing’s http.c) failing because my ISP’s transparent proxy downgrades to HTTP/1.0.

Perhaps this same code is affecting HBC? If so, there’s a patch available here:

  • 82 stiansoftcorehard // Nov 5, 2008 at 2:48 am

Why not add foldersupport? So we could have our apps in different folders, many of us have lots of apps on our sd cards. Like apps/media, apps/games, apps/utilities. And not necesarilly fixed folders, but we could make as many folders as we want to ourselves.

    Just a suggestion :p

  • 83 JohnH // Nov 5, 2008 at 2:58 am

Wow, 81 comments already. Don’t you guys watch elections? Anyway, I really hope you consider these ideas….

    1. Autoload. Simple to implement, yet potentially very useful. If HBC starts with a specifically-named DOL or ELF in the root folder of the SD card, it’ll execute it immediately without displaying the UI. This all by itself will accomplish a lot: people could “make their own Homebrew Channel” by putting it on a SD card. It’ll also allow people to use more easily use multiple SD cards for specific purposes. (This could be set, perhaps, to only happen/not happen if a button is held, but this is optional.)

    2. Wii remote initialization. When the HBC starts up, it will often change the controller assignments (#2 might end up #1 for example), which is sometimes very annoying. It’d be nice if it didn’t do this.

    3. Some control over the order software appears in the menu would be nice. This could be done relatively simply by adding an optional prominence value to the XML file, lower numbers sorted higher. (If not specified, the effective value should be least prominent.)

    4. It seems odd to not get more use out of the networking code, but I don’t have a suggestion for it at the moment.

  • 89 ryx // Nov 5, 2008 at 11:07 am

Hi! First thanks for your amazing work – I can’t say that often enough.

I completely second Muzer’s and HyperHacker’s proposal to release the source code in some way. How about creating a google-code project for the HBC?

That would have two big advantages – first, people could study the code and learn from it (you know like in “Use the source, Luke”). Second, everyone interested (and able to) could contribute code to the project and add new features (like ftp support, theming, etc).

I know this would still require the code to be reviewed by marcan, bushing or someone else, but I am sure that after a short time there would be enough talented coders that could care for reviewing patches and ensuring high quality patches.

Thanks in advance – whatever you do. :D

    Classic Controller support mostly.
A way to organize apps by number or category.
Maybe just by sub directories within the Apps directory. Perhaps with their own icon support?

    And uh, thats about it.
I’d like changable colors or custom backgrounds/bubbles saved to the SD card but if its one last thing I’d like those two first ones in there. I can live with blue.

  • 94 Seth Merkley // Nov 5, 2008 at 3:32 pm

I REALLY like the idea of being able to pass parameters to applications. Obviously developers would have to implement support in their applications, but there are limitless opportunities for this. You could have a field in the .xml for this, but whats more you could have keyboard support and have another button for typing in your own parameters right into the HBC. Whats more, you could have multiple fields in the .xml for multiple buttons on the description for different preset sets of launch options, these buttons could also have configurable text to display on them.

If it’s too much then I agree with HyperHacker, release the source :)

    @OiramOiram
Usually what I do to turn off my Wii is exit to the system menu from the emulator, or from the HBC. All the lastest emulators that I can think of have an option to reset to the system menu, so I usually just do this, wait a few seconds and then use the power button on the wiimote.

  • 95 http://marinos35.blogspot.com/ // Nov 5, 2008 at 5:45 pm

I also agree with some of the previous ideas, like changing background and being able to reorder the apps, but also thing that you should put some help info in the hbc. It could be available when hitting the menu button. It could give some info about the two status icons whose info is pretty hard to track down for example.

For the later versions you can also consider of putting something like
    1. hbc news section
    2. to be able to send apps to a bin or completely delete
    3. to have some basic weather info intergrade with the background
    4. the apps info to have the official icon symbols for the peripherals that they support
    5. the app’s info window can also become bigger and also support a photo for screenshots.

I could have gone for ever, but I have to get up early tomorrow.

One a little out of subject question though.
The port of mplayer that you introduced with DVDX, is it also under development for improvements? Because there is one big one that I need. I can’t view the Greek subtitles (my native language) as you are not allowed to choose the subtitles’ encoding.

thx guys for making everything happen. Keep up the good work.

    1. Let us adjust the background hue, either by an options menu or through a combination of button presses.

    2. Make the bubbles poppable. You could even include a popped bubble counter for when you start popping bubbles

    3. Keep it attractive and simple like you’ve done so far :)

  • 99 regalarius // Nov 6, 2008 at 1:08 am

1 – Gamecube controller support, because when switching apps that use the Gamecube controller I don’t like having to figure out which orifice I stuck my Wiimote in.

2 – Wiimote re-synch, in case my player 1 goes dead.

3 – Ooh, someone else suggested this and I want to agree with it — space remaining on media!

4 – Display modes. I’d like a textless, png-only mode so that I can display more apps on the screen. Text-only, pictureless would be good for some cases as well. Then again, these may not be as simple as what you were looking for.

5 – TV overscan. My TV overscans like nobody’s business.

6 – Custom sorting of applications.

7 – I saw a feature request involving shaking the Wiimote. PLEASE don’t do anything like this, I like to toss my Wiimote around in the air when I get bored :-D And I can’t tell you how many times I died in Driver because I scratched my bum, engaging the handbrake.

8 – I don’t know if there’s already any sort of communication of such things, but a news popup might be good…specifically, “DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE LATEST NINTENDO UPDATE! It will disable some homebrew!” This may not be plausible, or even desired.

9 – I also agree with the network reconnect button.

  • 100 Jake // Nov 6, 2008 at 2:34 am

It would be cool if there were a way to order your applications customly (they are currently sorted alphabetically by XML nametag, aren’t they?). Eventually by numbering the subfolders inside the /apps/ folder.
    e. g. so I could first display all the emulators, then homebrew games and finally the applications.

Also, it would be nice if there were a way to display more than four items at once, so you don’t have to press “+” or “-” several times to get where you want to (as I have many applications on SD).

Thank you guys for this great piece of software – I love it!

  • 101 murkantor // Nov 6, 2008 at 8:21 am

I agree with 96, popping bubbles would be an excellent time killer.

As for background music, maybe you could be able to get the person who made the channel music to make a small loop for the menu. Maybe something soft, slow and soothing, something like the music thats in the “My Aquarium” WiiWare game, but… Homebrew Channely…

Also, if WiiBrew had an RSS feed, maybe this could be downloaded, displaying recently updated applications and Wii News, similar to what XBMC has with Xbox-Scene.

I belive a customiseable background would be a some-what good some-what bad idea. Good because it’s what people want, bad because it would only increase load time of the menu.
But, a simple hue / colour changer wouldn’t go unnoticed.
(It’s not exactly a 100% dying wish feature that people want, it’s just a “would be kinda cool” feature)

  • 102 Red_Breast // Nov 6, 2008 at 8:24 am

Just a little something I personally don’t like is the exit confirmation.
“Go back to the boring, boring” etc.
But it’s your software so do as you like.
A bit of advice if you’d like people in the industry to take notice of you, that’s an if, then doing things as professional as possible, that is a simple yes/no would be better.
But something’s making me think you’re already aware of this.
Anyway love the stuff you’ve made already.

You got me wrong. I already know this, but this is not optimal.
Essentially what I want is what Apicio said: “Just a Power Off button to shoutdown your Wii, asd in GeexBox.” within the HBC Logout screen

I don’t want to grab a wiimote first, since I still have my GC or SNES Controller, besides this I want to shutdown completely (red light) not only Standby

  • 104 pinecone // Nov 6, 2008 at 10:19 am

This is getting a bit crazy (and probably also why developers don’t like opening up to suggestions).

    Just a quick one:

Instead of the proposed idea of ordering items by preference by ++ing that app’s order each time it is launched, a slightly more sophisticated method would be better. Here’s an example:

I have 20 apps on my HBC. They’ve all been there since Christmas, but half of them hardly used. I add a new app which I start using on a daily basis. This app would take (in a worst-case scenario) a year to get to the top of my preference list.

P.S: to marcan and the gang – if you’ve read as far as this post, I admire your patience and dedication to your users. Let me know if you need a hand with simple but tedious coding!

  • 105 solcott // Nov 6, 2008 at 11:05 am

OK, here’s my suggestion. What I would like to see is an automatic update feature for homebrew applications through HBC.

What I’m thinking you could do is add support for an optional line in meta.xml, say a line called update_url.

What you could do is put in meta.xml something like…

    http://domain.tld/appname

and HBC would check the address set for version.txt or whatever filename and do something like..

    if version > update_url_version
    wget http://domain.tld/appname/boot.dol
    wget http://domain.tld/appname/meta.xml
    wget http://domain.tld/appname/icon.png
    else
    launch appname;

Widescreen, widescreen, a thousand times widescreen. I’m tired of having this ONE thing be stretched out when the entire rest of the system, homebrew applications included, supports widescreen mode. SNES9X GX isn’t quite there yet, but at least it doesn’t stretch most of the time.

I can’t believe I’m only the second one requesting this. I’ve yet to meet someone with a Wii who doesn’t use it on a wide aspect ratio set.

  • 114 Joost // Nov 7, 2008 at 4:03 am

When loading an homebrew app via Wiiload, there is no kind of authorization at all. All you’ve got to know is the ip adress of the Nintendo Wii, which isn’t too hard too find out, and once you got the ip and the HBC is running, you can load anything you want, including harmful stuff… isn’t this a security risk?

It might be an idea to ask for permission in the HBC when someone is trying to load software via Wiiload. Something like: ’192.168.1.50 is trying to load boot.dol. [Accept] [Deny]‘

I think the default behaviour of the home button should be to return to the home screen.

The settings should really be a virtual (on screen) button rather than a physical button. The settings screen can show the IP address etc, but it’s nice to be able to have a 1 click solution to going to the home screen.

Also, the ability to custom-choose music could be nice.
Oh wait. These’ve already been asked for. Let’s see… Has the ability to organize your tabs been suggested yet? As in, move them from page to page by grabbing them with… I dunno, Z on the GC controller, or A+B on the Wii Remote?… How about the ability to scroll up and down instead of left to right? Or the ability for people to set the width (and possibly height?) of the little banner their application appears on, via the meta.xml file? Maybe even custom banners, done as some kind of overlay, where they put in the graphics for it simular to the way they do normal icons now…
Huh, maybe it’s too much… I hope I’m not coming off as any kind of selfish. I just figured “Suggestions? Maybe I could help! Now’s m’chance!”, so… Yep.

I can’t possibly be the first one to say it…. but I needz teh god mode!!!

Haha, but really, you guys do a great job. The only thing that I really want is a way to increase the number of programs listed at a time. Possibly adding an option to list only the icons. With that, you could have a double column listing. It might be a cool thing to try.

@Daniel: I’m sure they read every comment. They kind of have to, since posting is moderated. :B

    - Support for multiple languages in the meta.xml format (probably need more complete UTF-8 support to take full advantage of this)
    - Standalone DOL version loadable from the Twilight Hack and such (HBC is still useful as a loader even if it isn’t installed as a channel)

Hey, I read it all, and I’m not even part of the HBC dev team. :P It’s something to do when bored.

Background music. Forget skinning, forget customization, just make/find/commission something to give it a little ambiance.

Well, I just want to point out two little bugs I found. First of all, when there is a Game Cube memory card in slot b, it shows it as a USB Gecko, yet there are not any features that are inhibited (going on the internet, launching applications, etc.). Secondly, the first time I got queued for an update, the update froze while downloading (not installing) after staying on the update screen for about a minute or so. These were very minor issues I wanted to point out.

Yeah, it certainly would be nice for them to post about which features might happen and which will certainly not happen, so that people don’t keep asking for the same things…

    Hi,

as mentioned here many times already, I’d really also like to have USB drives accessible for loading additional programs. :-)

And if possible, I’d really enjoy a “css” – like “skinning” customization of the HBC layout, if you could manage that.
I saw that there were a couple requests for changing font size and colors.
Since you can’t fulfill every wish regarding the HBC layout, I think this might be the answer for every single one of these requests….

Thank you for the GREAT work you guys are doing. The Wii alone is alot of fun, but with HBC and all the community efforts it’s one heck of a marvellous machine!!!

    You rock!!!!!!!

    -Widescreen support
    -Adjustable background hue
    -Time/date/battery display
    -Organizable apps

I think these changes would make the HBC as complete and professional as possible.

Currently the network transfer code gives up/breaks if you look at it funny. Either allow for retry’s when transfering images or shore up the network code so it does not drop connections all the time.
