NTSC Semi-brick fix disc

May 17th, 2008 by bushing · 73 Comments

By popular request –

I’ve made a disc which will hopefully fix any NTSC Wii that got bricked by an imported Mario Kart game (or similar). It is an ISO with one partition — an update partition — and it contains three files:

  • IOS30-64-v1040.wad
  • SystemMenu-v289.wad
  • __update.inf:

System Menu v289 is the newest NTSC version of the system menu available on Nintendo’s download servers; it’s what you will get if you go into the Settings Menu and perform an update. I packed it into a WAD, and maintained the original, valid Nintendo signature, so it should be safe to install. (The disc, however, is fakesigned. This should not be a problem.)

I’m including IOS30 as well, just in case — it’s what this system menu uses. I would expect all systems out there to already have it installed, but hey.

Obligatory warning — I have tested this on 3 Wiis and it seemed to work fine, but I can’t make any promises that it won’t brick your Wii. It contains no safeguards; use this ONLY on an NTSC (US) Wii. If you use it on an NTSC/J or Pal Wii, it WILL BRICK you. (If there is a need, I can make similar discs for those systems.)

Good luck!

    Great work !!!

Does you give me the permition to use it for WUM ?

of course NTSC/J and PAL versions should be usefull too !!!

    Thanks

  • 3 Mark // May 17, 2008 at 8:28 am

An NTSC-J disc would be great. And I’m amazed that you managed to pull this all together so quickly with everything else you’re doing…this is awesome.

  • 4 tona // May 17, 2008 at 9:00 am

Might I suggest renaming it “USA” instead of just NTSC to avoid confusion?
PAL/USA/JPN are usually the standard names.

Hey there. Grats on the effort~!

Can you make one for a bricked jap wii please? I installed the damn SSBB-U on it and it semi-bricked my options.

  • 16 Newbie // May 17, 2008 at 12:28 pm

I bet we will see “IOS## injector” for this disk soon. It might be wise to provide few instruction on how to do it properly. IMO, it shouldn’t that difficult. Otherwise this nice blog will be swollen from PAL/USA/JPN repair disks requests…

  • 17 Ares // May 17, 2008 at 12:37 pm

PERFECT!!! My cousin have a NTSC/J bricked WII, I would love to kick his ass online some day (my wii never got bricked), if you could do a NTSC/J unbricker it would be great. Or make a how-to make a unbricker-disk so other plp could help.

    Tks.

  • 18 Cloudream // May 17, 2008 at 1:50 pm

There is a huge need in disc for NTSC/J in China…

    Great work~

  • 19 bailli // May 17, 2008 at 2:37 pm

    Nice work bushing :)

Does this work too if you had that system menu version installed before you semi-bricked your console?
Or in other words: Did you set some kind of flag inside the __update.inf to force an install of the updates?

  • 20 Matt // May 17, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Very nice work. But why did you use Rapidshare with it’s impossible CAPTCHAS? Megaupload would be much nicer for people in the US (where many people using this will reside). I don’t need it, just saying.
Would the wads work with the Wad Installer as well, or does the installer do something different?

  • 21 Padova // May 17, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Thank you so much… another semi-brick fixed in brazil! :)

  • 22 bushing // May 17, 2008 at 3:53 pm

@ Naamah31: Sure, go ahead, thanks for asking.

@Others: Sure, I will make PAL / JPN versions ton^H^H^Hsoon.

@Matt: Okay, I’ll try Megaupload. I hate those new CAPTCHAs, too. In theory these would work with a wad installer, but I would not recommend it unless you absolutely have to. Seems safer to use Nintendo’s code to actually perform the installation of the system menu.

@bailli: No, I did not set anything to force an update — unfortunately, that’s not possible (a restriction enforced inside of IOS prevents installing an older version of an existing title).

However, due to the way these things work, that is not a possible scenario. Er, let me try to be clearer.

There is a recommendation “always upgrade to the latest software using the system menu to prevent bricking”. The reason that works is because the version of the System Menu that comes on a new game has always been older than the latest version available on the update server. I don’t know why this is the case — probably because it takes several weeks to manufacture DVDs.

So, if you live in the USA and update using the system menu, you’ll get SystemMenu v.289. (aka 0×121 — see the entry for “00000001-00000002 at http://wii.marcansoft.com/wiimpersonator/reports/20080309-040542.log).

If you boot MK PAL, it will try to install SystemMenu v.258 (see http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=Title_Database). So, if you have already updated to 289 using the system menu, you’re “safe”.

So, nobody who already had 289 installed could have bricked their system (with any game that has been released). We’ll have to update this disc image the next time a game is released with a version newer than 289.

I cannot wait for the JAP version. Please make it as soon as possible. :D
My Wii was bricked by SSBB – U and I don’t wanna wait for another Nintendo game for update.

  • 32 Naamah31 // May 17, 2008 at 8:15 pm

    @bushing : ok, let’s go.
but just a little question : how did you managed to do it (making the partition, packing the iso and sign it) ?
because I tried a long time without succes to make such an update (one with just BOOT2 and all ISO up to the 36, to make an universal Brick Blocker update). I was using the Trucha Signer application and hex edit the files (_update.inf, fs.bin, …), but never successed…
I used an existing update partition, change the inside files, change the fs.bin, change the inside file again, and sign it. So my custom partition is ALWAYS the same size as the initial partition. But you just released an 36MB partition (unseen size), so I guess you did it from nothing (instead of modifying existing partition), am i right ?
Are you using some personnal tools (non public) ?

    Thanks a lot

  • 33 Andrew // May 17, 2008 at 8:24 pm

But could someone tell me how to get this to work please? I’ve tried unpacking it and burn the ISO but it jsut not working. Wii says “unable to read disc”. What did I do wrong?

  • 47 bushing // May 18, 2008 at 6:17 am

@Naamah31: Sorry, I have no magic tool to do this. I took a “small update” image (from a normal game, with only IOS and BOOT2) and hacked up the partition header and TMD (with a hex editor!) to create a 36MB partition. (There was some trial and error there — there is nothing magic about that number, but it must be at least 30MB or so to hold both IOS30 and the System Menu.)

I then hacked up the FST (again, using a hex editor) to rename the files and move them to the beginning of the partition, injected the files with the Trucha Signer, and then used dd to pad the end of the image with zeroes to make sure that the images could be burned successfully.

Burnt the iso twice …wii will still not read the disc :( maybe i will try one more time burning it at 2x speed instead of 8x?

  • 50 Unicron // May 18, 2008 at 7:29 am

With the current progress in homebrew, do you think you could make something like a “disc loader” to load custom update discs without the need for mod-chips, kinda like the Gecko region free, except with a lock, allowing ONLY custom update discs to be loaded(and then allowing nintendos own system to update)? This would be great for those who have bricked their Wii’s through Gecko region free, and don’t have a mod-chip(or to update your Wii without wireless). Even tough i don’t need it, it would be great for those who do.

And by the way, Great Work!!!
