HBC beta10, aka your last chance

November 4th, 2008 by marcan · 129 Comments

As you all know, we’re getting busy with several other projects, and HBC isn’t a priority. However, the beta9 release had a few rough edges, and some things that should have been fixed weren’t.

So we’re giving you the chance to voice your pet peeves about HBC now, and we’ll release a new version soon. Consider this version “final” at least for the time being. HBC is basically feature-complete, so we won’t be adding any new major features, but we want to get rid of some remaining bugs and annoyances. Once this new version is out, you’re going to be stuck with it for a while.

Things that we’ve already fixed/added for beta10:

  • meta.xml now handles non-ASCII characters properly (you can use iso-8859-1 or utf-8 encoding, but utf-8 is restricted to the iso-8859-1 subset)
  • Wiimote shutdown support (in libogc git now – we should have added this earlier)
  • Wiimote rumble now honors the rumble setting
  • A crash bug or two (hard to hit)

Post a comment if you want something fixed. We reserve the right to fix whatever we want and ignore the rest, but at least we promise we’ll listen. Please read the comments before asking for something; we don’t want 20 people mentioning the same thing.

Guys, NO BIG NEW FEATURES. Don’t even think about integrating other apps, or adding disc loading, or anything like that. We’re talking about small fixes like honoring some setting or adding some minor controller support. Classic controller support is plausible. Fixing some graphical problem is doable. Integrating FTPii isn’t. Sound isn’t. I’m deleting totally implausible posts to keep things sane.

Edit 2: to the people who requested features which are obviously already in beta9 or even beta8: shame, shame, shame.

Speak Up Now Or Forever Hold Your Peace.
Comments are now closed – they’re starting to get repetitive. You’ve had your chance. If you believe you’ve found a real bug that was not mentioned in the comments (and that doesn’t mean “I believe this should be done this way” – it means “this is crashing / breaking / not working properly”), drop me an e-mail at marcan@marcansoft.com or message marcan on EFNet.

I agree with 96, popping bubbles would be an excellent time killer.

As for background music, maybe you could be able to get the person who made the channel music to make a small loop for the menu. Maybe something soft, slow and soothing, something like the music thats in the “My Aquarium” WiiWare game, but… Homebrew Channely…

Also, if WiiBrew had an RSS feed, maybe this could be downloaded, displaying recently updated applications and Wii News, similar to what XBMC has with Xbox-Scene.

I belive a customiseable background would be a some-what good some-what bad idea. Good because it’s what people want, bad because it would only increase load time of the menu.
But, a simple hue / colour changer wouldn’t go unnoticed.
(It’s not exactly a 100% dying wish feature that people want, it’s just a “would be kinda cool” feature)

Just a little something I personally don’t like is the exit confirmation.
“Go back to the boring, boring” etc.
But it’s your software so do as you like.
A bit of advice if you’d like people in the industry to take notice of you, that’s an if, then doing things as professional as possible, that is a simple yes/no would be better.
But something’s making me think you’re already aware of this.
Anyway love the stuff you’ve made already.

    @Seth Merkley:

You got me wrong. I already know this, but this is not optimal.
Essentially what I want is what Apicio said: “Just a Power Off button to shoutdown your Wii, asd in GeexBox.” within the HBC Logout screen

I don’t want to grab a wiimote first, since I still have my GC or SNES Controller, besides this I want to shutdown completely (red light) not only Standby

This is getting a bit crazy (and probably also why developers don’t like opening up to suggestions).

    Just a quick one:

Instead of the proposed idea of ordering items by preference by ++ing that app’s order each time it is launched, a slightly more sophisticated method would be better. Here’s an example:

I have 20 apps on my HBC. They’ve all been there since Christmas, but half of them hardly used. I add a new app which I start using on a daily basis. This app would take (in a worst-case scenario) a year to get to the top of my preference list.

P.S: to marcan and the gang – if you’ve read as far as this post, I admire your patience and dedication to your users. Let me know if you need a hand with simple but tedious coding!

OK, here’s my suggestion. What I would like to see is an automatic update feature for homebrew applications through HBC.

What I’m thinking you could do is add support for an optional line in meta.xml, say a line called update_url.

What you could do is put in meta.xml something like…

    http://domain.tld/appname

and HBC would check the address set for version.txt or whatever filename and do something like..

    if version > update_url_version
    wget http://domain.tld/appname/boot.dol
    wget http://domain.tld/appname/meta.xml
    wget http://domain.tld/appname/icon.png
    else
    launch appname;
    fi

    Hi guys,

first of all -> GR8 WORK, keep on rockin

All other things have been mentioned (sorting, deleting, free size, other media…), except of a Feature using TCPLoad easy in an DHCP-Environment. How about adding (ON/OFF-switchable) support for sending UDP-Packages out of the HBC with the Name and the IP, so that a PC-Side TCPLoad just waits for that Package to send the File and not always have to enter a changed IP? Just a thought but would be great…

    Txs a lot Guys

    My requests:

    1 – ordering of apps
2 – user-controlled grouping of apps (editing xml is fine)
3 – ability to delete an entire app & its directories

Ah, I see where you’re coming from. You’re right.

-Wiimote motion control: swing the Wiimote left and right to change page
-Fix the “Today’s Accomplishments” on the Message Board so the times are correct

  • 10 ThaDSman // Nov 6, 2008 at 4:03 pm

I would just love the feature to tell you what controllers are compatible with the homebrew.
Like wiibrew does in the “Peripherals and features” section. like this http://wiibrew.org/w/images/4/4f/Wiimote1.svg

  • 11 me.yahoo.com/a/7tq2m1ohp // Nov 6, 2008 at 11:14 pm

Widescreen, widescreen, a thousand times widescreen. I’m tired of having this ONE thing be stretched out when the entire rest of the system, homebrew applications included, supports widescreen mode. SNES9X GX isn’t quite there yet, but at least it doesn’t stretch most of the time.

I can’t believe I’m only the second one requesting this. I’ve yet to meet someone with a Wii who doesn’t use it on a wide aspect ratio set.

I had two other requests, but you filled them both. If you were wondering, they were to use system settings for rumble and allow shut-down of the remotes.

    @marcan, bushing, etc

Guys, be honest: are you ever reading all this stuff? 😛

  • 13 acidzombie24.myopenid.com/ // Nov 7, 2008 at 2:48 am

    1) Have the B button close the GUI after clicking on a game. When i am in another room i might press A accidentally to bring that dialog, then need to walk into the room, point and hit back to get rid of it so i can wifi

    2) Wifi even when the game load/back dialog is up 🙂

    3) if i wifi a game, instead of using fat:/myapp.dol i’d like 192.168.?.XYZ:/myapp.dol, i can then use the IP in there, connect to that PC and communicate with my server or w/e

  • 14 Joost // Nov 7, 2008 at 4:03 am

When loading an homebrew app via Wiiload, there is no kind of authorization at all. All you’ve got to know is the ip adress of the Nintendo Wii, which isn’t too hard too find out, and once you got the ip and the HBC is running, you can load anything you want, including harmful stuff… isn’t this a security risk?

It might be an idea to ask for permission in the HBC when someone is trying to load software via Wiiload. Something like: ‘192.168.1.50 is trying to load boot.dol. [Accept] [Deny]’

  • 15 joshysquashy // Nov 7, 2008 at 4:54 am

I think the default behaviour of the home button should be to return to the home screen.

The settings should really be a virtual (on screen) button rather than a physical button. The settings screen can show the IP address etc, but it’s nice to be able to have a 1 click solution to going to the home screen.

A silly suggestion: Let me pop the bubbles in the background.
Also, the ability to custom-choose music could be nice.
Oh wait. These’ve already been asked for. Let’s see… Has the ability to organize your tabs been suggested yet? As in, move them from page to page by grabbing them with… I dunno, Z on the GC controller, or A+B on the Wii Remote?… How about the ability to scroll up and down instead of left to right? Or the ability for people to set the width (and possibly height?) of the little banner their application appears on, via the meta.xml file? Maybe even custom banners, done as some kind of overlay, where they put in the graphics for it simular to the way they do normal icons now…
Huh, maybe it’s too much… I hope I’m not coming off as any kind of selfish. I just figured “Suggestions? Maybe I could help! Now’s m’chance!”, so… Yep.

  • 18 Notsogr8one // Nov 7, 2008 at 3:49 pm

I can’t possibly be the first one to say it…. but I needz teh god mode!!!

Haha, but really, you guys do a great job. The only thing that I really want is a way to increase the number of programs listed at a time. Possibly adding an option to list only the icons. With that, you could have a double column listing. It might be a cool thing to try.

  • 20 mralert.blogspot.com/ // Nov 7, 2008 at 6:42 pm

    – Support for multiple languages in the meta.xml format (probably need more complete UTF-8 support to take full advantage of this)
    – Standalone DOL version loadable from the Twilight Hack and such (HBC is still useful as a loader even if it isn’t installed as a channel)

  • 21 ChuckBartowski // Nov 7, 2008 at 8:20 pm

MAybe Custom backgrounds, like setting an image. Or even just color switching of the current. Hope thats not too much

  • 22 HyperHacker // Nov 7, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Hey, I read it all, and I’m not even part of the HBC dev team. 😛 It’s something to do when bored.

  • 23 bugger // Nov 7, 2008 at 11:16 pm

Background music. Forget skinning, forget customization, just make/find/commission something to give it a little ambiance.

  • 24 JB2448 // Nov 8, 2008 at 9:06 am

Well, I just want to point out two little bugs I found. First of all, when there is a Game Cube memory card in slot b, it shows it as a USB Gecko, yet there are not any features that are inhibited (going on the internet, launching applications, etc.). Secondly, the first time I got queued for an update, the update froze while downloading (not installing) after staying on the update screen for about a minute or so. These were very minor issues I wanted to point out.

  • 25 Seth Merkley // Nov 8, 2008 at 1:04 pm

Yeah, it certainly would be nice for them to post about which features might happen and which will certainly not happen, so that people don’t keep asking for the same things…

  • 26 crimson1968 // Nov 8, 2008 at 1:20 pm

    Hi,

as mentioned here many times already, I’d really also like to have USB drives accessible for loading additional programs. 🙂

And if possible, I’d really enjoy a “css” – like “skinning” customization of the HBC layout, if you could manage that.
I saw that there were a couple requests for changing font size and colors.
Since you can’t fulfill every wish regarding the HBC layout, I think this might be the answer for every single one of these requests….

Thank you for the GREAT work you guys are doing. The Wii alone is alot of fun, but with HBC and all the community efforts it’s one heck of a marvellous machine!!!

    You rock!!!!!!!

  • 27 BigGreasyNagro // Nov 8, 2008 at 3:29 pm

    -Widescreen support
    -Adjustable background hue
    -Time/date/battery display
    -Organizable apps

I think these changes would make the HBC as complete and professional as possible.

Currently the network transfer code gives up/breaks if you look at it funny. Either allow for retry’s when transfering images or shore up the network code so it does not drop connections all the time.
