Twilight Hack v0.1beta1

June 21st, 2008 by marcan · 188 Comments

This new version of the Twilight Hack is compatible with version 3.3 of the Wii System Menu, using the workarounds explained in previous posts. Thanks to everyone on IRC who contributed to the search for the bugs, and to tmbinc and tehpola for finding the two bugs that make this possible.

Changelog for this release:

  • The Twilight Hack is now compatible with version 3.3 of the Wii System Menu.
  • Improvements in video configuration. The entire console should now be visible in all video modes, and scrolling has been improved.
  • For the USA version, the two variants of the hack have been packed into one save file. Just select the save slot that corresponds to your version of Twilight Pricess when you start the game.
  • New savegame icons by drmr. The new icons now show which region that version of the hack is for.
  • This version now tries to load boot.dol, and falls back to boot.elf if boot.dol is not found.
  • ???????
  • Many, many bug fixes.

Download it here. Head over to Wiibrew for more information and updates. See the included README for installation and usage instructions.

    Wow it works, mint

  • 4 marcan // Jun 21, 2008 at 1:34 pm

Yes, basically. We changed the distribution format a bit, but that was just to simplify things and for cosmetic reasons, not because of v3.3.

  • 5 Louise // Jun 21, 2008 at 1:34 pm

I am not a code wizard, so I don’t understand if there a any down sides to update to 3.3 or not?

But I think it is mighty interesting :) Can anyone explain how the 2 bugs combined allows for this hack to still work?

  • 6 marcan // Jun 21, 2008 at 1:35 pm

Read up on the previous post and its comments, it’s all explained there.

The only real downside to 3.3 at the moment is that fakesigned discs no longer work.

  • 7 Comedy // Jun 21, 2008 at 1:37 pm

3.3 still fixed the Trucha signing bug. I heard around that it’s still possible to load trucha signed discs through gecko region free. Is that true?

  • 20 Daverball // Jun 21, 2008 at 2:38 pm

it doesn’t make much sense to update to 3.3 at the moment, unless you want to put miis in the mii parade…

Additionally trucha signed discs won’t work with 3.3 so it’s better to stay with 3.2. But sooner or later you’ll have to update anyway.

  • 21 Anonymous // Jun 21, 2008 at 2:41 pm

Trucha signed disks will work if you load them with Gecko Region Free.

  • 22 Anonymous // Jun 21, 2008 at 2:47 pm

    Uhh… I’m gonna sound noobish, but…

What’s “trucha signing”? What are “trucha signed discs”?

  • 23 darkarcon // Jun 21, 2008 at 2:48 pm

You guys did a GREAT work!
Many thanks to you, I accidently updated my Wii to 3.3 without knowing, that it will break every Trucha signed disc and the Twilight Hack. But now a solution for that is approaching, keep it up!

  • 24 Maikel // Jun 21, 2008 at 2:49 pm

You guys are awesome 😀 Thanks a lot for this, I’ll try it tomorrow :)

Is there any reason now not to update to 3.3?

  • 25 pipeline // Jun 21, 2008 at 2:55 pm

    TwilightHack 0 or TwilightHack2?

    Do both work?

  • 26 bushing // Jun 21, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Is there any reason TO update to 3.3?

@pipeline: try both. only one will work on your particular version of zelda.

  • 27 pipeline // Jun 21, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Has anyone installed the home brew with it yet?

  • 28 Maikel // Jun 21, 2008 at 3:06 pm

@ bushing: at the moment, not really, but I’m going to buy the European version of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. If it contains v3.3, I could probably use Gecko Region Free to skip the updating, but I don’t know if it has any use now that the Twilight Hack can be used again.

Good Job Bushing and friends. :)

Can this be used to make the Datel Freeloader disc work again on 3.3? Need it for Trauma Center New Blood USA on PAL, because no other solution (including modchip) is able to boot this game on PAL.

  • 38 Daverball // Jun 21, 2008 at 4:13 pm

  • 39 Nobody // Jun 21, 2008 at 4:35 pm

  • 42 jotokun // Jun 21, 2008 at 4:49 pm

I cant get it to work for some reason. I coppy the file over, exactly like I did with the previous twilight hack, and it wont show up on the menu when I go to coppy it over… I’ve tried(on the computer) coppying it over manualy, merging the folder with the one in the zip file, replacing it with the one in the zip file, formating the card and puting the folder there, and nothing seems to work… if anyone can help me, that’d be great. If not, then thats ok.

But since it seems to work for everyone else, great job, Bushing!

    The Twilight Hack Song
This was a triumph. I’m making note here: HACKED AGAIN. It’s hard to overstate our satisfaction. Team Twiizers We do what we must because we can. For the good of all of us, except the ones who pirate. But there’s no sense crying over every quick plug. We just keep on trying while there’s still one more bug. And the homebrew comes back, and we make a neat hack. For the people whose Wiis want new life. I’m not even angry. I’m being so sincere right now. Even though they broke the hack and patched it. And fixed IOS30. And broke every fake signed disc out there. As they failed it hurt because… They were attacking homebrew!. Now these quick hack fixes have some beautiful holes, So we found them fast and easily met our goals. And I’m glad we got burned. Think of all the things we learned. For the people whose Wiis want new life! Go ahead and patch it. I think I’d like to have some fun. Maybe you’ll find an undisclosed bug. Maybe that huge one. That was a joke, haha, fat chance! Anyway, this homebrew’s great. It’s also legal to use. Look at me still talking, when there’s hacking to do. It might take three months, but they’ll patch this one too. I’ve experiments to run, there’s reversi ng to be done. On the people whose Wiis want new life. And believe me the Wiis want new life!..I’m busy hacking and they want new life. I feel FANTASTIC and they’ll get new life. While you’re dying they’ll still be alive. And when you’re dead they’ll still have some life. STILL ALIVE, still alive.

  • 47 Stupid Dog // Jun 21, 2008 at 5:52 pm

@Daverball: Thanks, works fantastic, installed the Homebrew channel in the same run, thanks for the tip!

    There is no source code.

Maybe when you saw the thing that said source on that one website, you thought it meant source code instead of where they got the info from.

instead of doing this lame “savefile look’n destroy” stuff, is it possible for nintendo to directly prevent the buffer overflow attack used by the TP hack ?

what would happen in this case, do you have other ideas in your pocket ?

  • 77 Dasda // Jun 22, 2008 at 1:36 am

Chris: They can fix it by patching the game when they start it, similar to what Action Replay does when it applies cheats. It is possible to exploit other games than Zelda, so this would only fix the Twilight Hack. I think it’s time to start developing another save-game exploit, because this bug would be pretty easy to fix.

excellent work! home brew rules! i must say i havent been this excited since they announced the wii remote!! i have a question , is the home brew channel safe to use? i havent installed it out of fear it could disable my wii or it might cause problems in the long run, im thinking now, i still have firmware update 3.2 ,should i have no worries and just install the HBC right now and then update to 3.3? and save me the time of doing the new twilight hack process on my sd card again and load zelda everytime i wanna play?? please HBC users give me your thoughts!

@Andrew Vrba: Brutal honesty accepted, but no, I don’t know that people will use this for piracy.

Well, let me be more precise. This cannot be used at all for disc-based piracy. Some will probably use it for the famous WAD installer; many others will use it for legitimate homebrew. Does one outweigh the other?

  • 120 wiibii // Jun 22, 2008 at 7:41 pm

@TNT yeah that’s a bad idea to use the twilight hack and a normal game in the same save file. Wel i think this should work, go into zelda and once in main menu to pick which save you want to continue click the twilight hack game save file and erase it now you game save should be legit, so if you update to 3.3 it should not delete the game save has there is no long a hacked save file.

  • 121 wiibii // Jun 22, 2008 at 7:44 pm

ohh and i guess you can back it up in case something goes wrong, then copy over the twilight hack and install HBC then you can put back the original game save that you are playing and use HBC for all your homebrew

  • 128 Anonymous coward // Jun 23, 2008 at 3:35 am

I don’t think Nintendo are that pwn3d. The signing bug has been fixed so Freeloader doesn’t work and trucha signed discs don’t work either.

This means that playing games from other regions is more difficult and piracy has more chance of bricking your Wii if system updates from other regions get installed; you need to wait until a later system update comes out before running a pirated game as you can’t modify a disc to remove the update, which means piracy of new titles slows down. Of course if you download a later system update then that will have more holes fixed so you’re kind of being pushed into upgrading, especially if the next update also has a feature like USB storage support.

Probably the next update will go after Gecko Region Free (the next most important region/update hack out there) as well as the TH.

This unfortunately is a shame as Gecko is a debugging tool, not designed to help piracy, but as it can be used to get round Nintendo’s region lock policy then they’ll have to go after it. Same as the TH.

It’s a shame that Nintendo pulls the plug on homebrew because of piracy, but most people posting on these forums couldn’t care, they’ll just keep repeatedly complaining until they get a new hack as they have done this time.

    @Anonymous coward (128)….
If you look back the build marker for the System menu was March 6, 2008, 07:27.
The whole VC piracy thing didn’t come about until over a month later. And the Twilight hack was released about a month earlier. Trucha (and freeloader) were released a couple of weeks after the TH, so it was probably in response to both the Twilight Hack and Trucha.

I don’t know how Gecko works but I assume it would be harder to patch as by the time you run it from the HBC/TH, you’re already in control of the Wii.

    #130: Atacama.

Possibly. Maybe Nintendo constantly develop patches to holes as and when they find them or an exploit comes out on the Internet but may not always deploy them due to worries over stability.

If they weren’t willing to deploy the patch because of stability or were willing to wait a while and roll it out with the next big update because it wasn’t that big a deal, then they would have changed their minds after VC piracy started.

They did slip up on the testing for the Twilight Hack so they may have rushed things.

  • 134 TNT // Jun 23, 2008 at 8:02 am

  • 142 HyperHacker // Jun 23, 2008 at 6:14 pm

The alpha versions won’t work on 3.3, so if you still have some need to use the Twilight Hack after updating, you’ll need the beta. However if you’ve already installed the Homebrew Channel, there’s not much need to use Twilight Hack. You can install HBC before updating, it won’t hurt anything.

Twilight Princess is the first game that they found an exploit on. There is no guarantee that any game has this type of exploit on it, although more games more than likely do.

Hey thanks for Bushing great work…

It does make you wonder though, does Nintendo actually perform any QC on their code? I mean it wouldnt take a skilled C coder to long to look at the C code from this new SaveGame deletion code and come to the same conclustions as we did about how to bypass it, so did someone just knock it up and say that wont be brocken and sent it on its way, or did Nintendo actually pay someone to check the code first… If they did pay someone, i think they need to hire someone else :)

GeckoOS (the new Gecko Region Free) can replace the freeloader.

  • 155 Atacama // Jun 27, 2008 at 3:45 am

I would expect Nintendo would be watching Wiibrew etc in some form of another, so I don’t think the headlines make much difference there.

If I remember correctly, Twilight Princess was the only game they tried to exploit, and succeeded. There are plenty of Wii games out there now, and I’m sure that there’s more that are exploitable, and Team Twiizers are probably working on just that, and I’m guessing will keep it under wraps until Nintendo patch the Twilight Hack again. (Shall we look at September for that? ;)).

  • 156 launchd // Jun 27, 2008 at 8:13 am

    I don’t have Twilight Preincess :-(
Plus, a week ago in the morning I updated the System Menu, in the afternoon I heard about the Homebrew channel and how the new update broke it.

    Just thinking… 😉

  • 157 wiimii // Jun 27, 2008 at 4:00 pm

no why would they make a exploit for another game when they have a working one already, just becuse you dont have zelda dosent mean they should make one just for you. The new update did nothing to HBC mine works fineand so dose everyone elses, PLUS if you do want tio re install it why not just rent zelda add the exploit and use that to install HBC

  • 160 launchd // Jun 28, 2008 at 12:37 am

OK, I didn’t think about renting, but still it’s better to exploit something standard in the Wii, like Wii Sports savegames, Miis and such.

  • 161 Atacama // Jun 28, 2008 at 3:21 am

Not everything is exploitable, if you look at the PSP scene, the only game exploits that have allowed homebrew to run on the are GTA:Liberty City Stories and Lumines. Obviously there could be other games that are exploitable, but with the pandora battery out there, I think the hunt for game exploits on the PSP is on hold.
Twilight Princess had a fairly obvious potential exploit, in that it had user enterable content which would be potentially unchecked by the code (and it was).
Wii Sports doesn’t have such an obvious potential exploit, and exploiting Miis could be risky with causing bricked wiis.

Keeping exploits hidden from Nintendo whilst one still works is rather wise in my opinion.
